Statement: In accordance with the WNC Security-Related Procedures and Practices Manual, the Public Safety Department is authorized to make student notifications that are of an emergency or police nature. Otherwise, college employees can only disseminate designated directory information regarding current and past students.

Section 1: Procedure


  1. When an individual asks for information about or notification of a WNC student, the employee should inform the individual that the college may not release any personal information regarding the students class schedule or whereabouts. College policy and federal law prohibit releasing most other information as well.
  2. Ask the individual if this is an emergency. If so, have the individual wait and contact Public Safety. Security personnel will determine if it is truly an emergency and handle the situation.
  3. If the individual says it is not an emergency, but is unwilling to accept that we may not provide information, it then becomes a security issue and the employee should notify Public Safety.
  4. The same process applies for telephone calls.
  5. If, at any time an employee feels threatened or uncomfortable with an individuals behavior, contact Public Safety.
  6. Public Safety personnel screen each request by asking relevant questions. Therefore, anyone making such a request is expected to provide some or all of the following information:
    1. students Social Security number
    2. full name
    3. college program
    4. class the student is currently in
    5. identification of person making the request
    6. the reason for the need to notify

Section 2: Contact Information


  1. Carson campus
    1. Public Safety staff is on duty Monday Friday, 9:30 a.m. 1:30 a.m.,
      Saturday, 7 a.m. 11 p.m., and Sunday, 7 a.m. 5 p.m.
    2. If Public Safety personnel are not available or cannot be reached, please notify the Dean of Students office (775-445-3271) and the office staff will assist the person. If this occurs after hours, contact the Dean of Students at home (775-883-8149) or by calling his cell phone (775-220-3424). Remember, this is only if Public Safety personnel are not available.
  2. High Tech Center
    1. Public Safety staff is on duty Monday Thursday, 4 10 p.m.
  3. Douglas campus
    1. Public Safety staff is on duty Monday Thursday, 5 10 p.m.
    2. Outside of these hours, follow the emergency procedure established for the Douglas campus.
  4. Fallon campus
    1. The Fallon campus does not have Public Safety staff. The Fallon Police Department should be contacted if there is a problem or follow the emergency procedure established for the Fallon campus.
